Just what the world needs, another blog! Is she going to go into nauseating detail about her personal life? (No.) Is she going to post pictures of every meal she eats? (Maybe!) No, folks, this old lady just wants to get well, and my ever optimistic self thinks, “This time is really it!” And I want to keep track of the details as they unfold, to help myself and perhaps encourage others. As a 56 year old mom of six who has struggled with “invisible illness” my whole life, I am embarking on yet another journey of intense healing through nutrition, and the books “The Paleo Approach” by Sarah Ballantyne and “The Wahls Protocol” by Terry Wahls MD will be my guides. There are many times I wish I did not struggle with the health problems I have had since childhood, yet at the same time I am so thankful that I was gently guided to seek nutritional healing over the last 20 years. My journey has been all over the map: gluten free (always), whole foods, GAPS/SCD, raw vegan, cooked vegan, Trim Healthy Mama, and I have made progress with all but none have been “The Answer.” Raw vegan came very close but was unsustainable. It is frustrating to know how disciplined I am and yet to know that on the outside others probably still just perceive me as a chubby woman who gets lot of headaches. Yes, I am vain. But, then I do a home visit with someone whose story 20 years ago was just like mine, but now they are 300 pounds, in a wheelchair, on 30 meds, and completely disabled. I know that but for the grace of God and the healing power of His “Farmacy,” that would be me. So now I am ready to embark on the most restrictive protocol yet. Gluten free, grain free, dairy free, nut and seed free, egg free, sugar free, nightshade free. These foods are not bad in and of themselves, but for someone like me with longstanding intestinal damage, they can cause an autoimmune response resulting in the joint pain, headaches, fatigue, brain fog, and elevated blood sugars I experience. The hope is that a season off these foods, combined with eating NINE cups a day of colorful veggies and low sugar fruits, healing fats, and pasture raised meats, will bring lasting healing and then I can slowly add things back in. I plan to blog as a way to keep myself accountable. I hope you will join me in this great adventure!
